Now What?

Now that all the glitter and glamour (?) of the Cebuano Film Festival is gone, the Cebuano independent filmmakers will now have to face the question: Now what?

I hear that another film festival is brewing for June, Cebuano International Film Festival as they call it. However, I question the timing of an "international film festival" when the audience isn't even ready for independent cinema. And better yet, a film school notoriously known for trying to bring Hollywood (kuno) filmmaking to Cebu is the force behind this festival.

We should re-educate and redefine the consciousness of the audience. Remold the Hollywood thinking into a mind that will love its own culture, its own dialect, its own film. We must also put our minds together and form a network wherein our films will be given exposure outside of our provinces. We must go above and beyond egos and personal ambitions and act on what is needed for the betterment of the community.

Will I be able to fulfill the expectations handed down to me by the great directors I met during the film congress? I do not know but I will sure try.

  • I think you need to get more exposure to the Visayan Movie public. More ads and articles, 'spread the word' and all sorts of advertising to educate and inform the Cebuano movie audience.

For the organization to achieve your goal, as long as everyone accepts the responsibility and ownership of the task, I believe you have a very doable goal. Total commitment is a must, couple with full cooperation and continuous communication.

I support your dream, Benjie. I am far away but if there's anything I can do to support your project please email me anytime.

    God Bless!

  • How can people appreciate film when most people have absolutely no exposure to Godard, Kurosawa, etc? With the advent of digital projection and the phenomenon of micro cinemas, small non profit film clubs need protection from the exhibition and censorship boards so they can freely exhibit quality films to the masses without fear of copyright infringement. That's the first step. Bring film to the people.

  • How can the people appreciate great film when there is no access to it? In the age of digital projection and micro cinemas, it should be legal for a non profit film club to project films classics by Godard, Sanjit Ray, Kurosawa, Ozu, etc to the masses without fear of copyright infringement or because it wasn't cleared by the PI censorship exhibition board. Cinema lovers unite!
